ABOUT US: DIVISION MISSION AND FUNCTIONAL STATEMENTS
Mission Statement

The Propulsion Systems Division provides enabling capabilities to the aerospace community by performing research and developing technology in the areas of turbomachinery, combustion, propellants, icing, inlets, nozzles, propulsion system simulation, engine systems, acoustics, and computational methods. We work in partnership with internal and external organizations to conduct research and development and to plan new initiatives. We advocate for Center resources to ensure technical capabilities in strategic areas consistent with the Center's roles and mission. We maintains GRC technology leadership, and interface with customers and stakeholders to transfer technology.

Functional Statement

The Propulsion Systems Division is delegated the responsibility to:

  • Perform systems and mission assessments used to advocate, plan, develop, formulate, implement, and align the aerospace programs/projects assigned to the Center by the NASA Headquarters Mission Directorates in partnerships with the Divisions of the Programs and Projects Directorate.
  • Manage the implementation of approved system and mission assessments, in-house and contracted, to ensure performance and deliverables consistent with submitted cost, schedule, and risk plans.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with the other organizations in the Center performing research, development, project management, systems research and conceptual design.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with systems analysis groups at other NASA Centers, government agencies, industry, academia, and the community.
  • Ensure expertise and tools required to perform systems and mission analyses are available.
  • Report status of systems and mission assessments at GRC and Headquarters management/technical reviews as requested.
  • Support the development of the strategic plan which sets out the Center's future goals and priorities in partnership with all Center organizations.
  • Ensure that the division's workforce embraces and reflects the values of Safety, the NASA Family, integrity, and excellence in all the activities required for achieving the programmatic goals.
